A isolation transformer is a transformer, often with symmetrical windings, which is used to separate two circuits. An isolation transformer allows power or AC signal to be taken from one device and fed into another without electrically connecting the two circuits. These transformers block interference caused by ground loops. Many of these isolation transformers have electrostatic shields which are used for power supplies for sensitive equipment such as computers or laboratory instruments.

Isolation transformer pay care attention to capacitive coupling between the two windings. The reason is  excessive capacitance could also couple AC current from the primary to the secondary. Usually a grounded shield is placed between the primary and the secondary.

When an isolation transformer is use with switching power supplies, its prevents higher-order harmonic signals from degrading the performance of surrounding internal equipment, causing output voltage ripple. In computers or other equipment incorporating microprocessors, in which high-frequency signals generate harmonics that can interfere with surrounding electronic equipment.

The neutral wire of an outlet is connected to ground. Grounded objects near the device under test such as desk, lamps and etc. may be a hazardous potential difference with respect to that device. By using the isolation transformer, the bonding is eliminated, and the shock hazard is entirely contained within the device.
