Liquid filled medium voltage transformers has more efficient cooling medium in reducing hot spot temperatures in the coils, and have a better overload capability. They do have some drawback. Fire prevention is more important because the liquid may catch fire or explode. Depending on the applications, liquid-fill transformers may require a containment trough for protection against possible leaks of the fluid.

The Dry-type medium voltage transformers are the most economical and are used for a wide range of industrial applications. These transformers can be installed close to the load, and can avoid the expensive cable run. Low operating and maintenance costs are another reason many companies use the dry-type transformer. When choosing a dry or liquid filled the changeover point between the two is between 500kVA to about 2.5MVA, with dry-types used for the lower ratings and the wet-types for the higher rating. 

Cast coil medium voltage transformers are used in the most demanding and toughest applications and under the most severe operating conditions. They are capability to handle unusually high impact and short circuit loads. The winding are protected from moisture and airborne contaminants which has a harmful effect on transformers. These transformers are located in harsh environments such as cement and chemical plants and outdoor installations where moisture, salt spray, corrosive fumes, dust, and metal particles can destroy other types of dry-type transformers.
