What is a Voltage Transformers

What is a voltage Transformer

A simple explanation of a voltage transformer is that it a voltage changer. Voltage transformers do not generate electrical power, it transfers electrical power.  Voltage  Transformer can either step-up voltage or step it down, and some are used to isolate one voltage from another. Because voltage transformers have no moving parts and is a completely static solid state device, under normal use, they are trouble-free and can last up to 35 years.

The simplest design of a voltage transformer consists of two or more coils of insulated wire wound on a laminated steel core. When voltage is introduced in one coil, which is called the primary, it magnetizes the iron core. A voltage is then induced in the other coil, which is called the secondary or output coil.

What is a Voltage Transformer - How does a voltage transformer works?

A voltage transformer works by linking the two windings with  a magnetic circuit which must be common to both windings. The link connecting the two windings is the iron core on which both windings are wound. The core is not a solid bar of steel, it has many layers of thin steel call laminations. One of the winding is the primary and the other winding is the secondary. When the primary winding is energized by an AC source, which is an alternating magnetic field, an electrical voltage is produced.  This alternating magnetic field is called a flux which is established in the transformer core. This flux created by the applied voltage on the primary winding induces a voltage on the secondary winding.

A voltage transformer works by linking the two windings with a magnetic circuit. The windings are usually made from aluminum or copper conductors wound in coils around an iron core and the number of turns in each coil will determine the voltage the more turns the higher the voltage. So if the primary has more loops and the secondary coil has a couple of loops, the input coil will be a higher voltage than the output coil. If the output coil has more voltage, it's called a step-up transformer, if the input coil has more voltage, it's called a step-down transformer.

Step-Down Transformers
It is defined as a transformer that reduces or step-down voltage.

  Step-Up Transformers
A step-up transformer is designed where the secondary voltage is greater than it's primary voltage and step-up the voltage.

   Distribution  Transformers
Are categorized in dry-type or liquid-immersed type, and available in single or three phase.
